You First

You first. These two words are what I usually hear people say when dared to do a challenge. A host of a TV show that challenges contestants to do difficult stunts, starts the show by doing them herself. She does it to show the contestants that what is being asked of them is not impossible.

We all have our own struggles. They may be issues concerning pride, anger, jealousy, lust -- just to name a few. There are times when they seem to be so overpowering, that we feel like "throwing in the towel" and just say, "Well, that's life. You win some, you lose some."

Personally, i want to be a more loving and forgiving person. I think that majority of the human population share this desire. It really is an extra challenge.

The good news is that when our struggles become overwhelming, we can look to the One who took the challenge first and follow His example.

"We love each other because He loved us first." (1 John 4:19)

"Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others." (Colossians 3:13)

Let us ask the Lord to give us the strength to overcome our struggles. There is hope because He did it first.

To Know Is To Love

My friend Boyet knows me so well that he can tell you what I like to eat when I'm tired, when I'm in the mood to celebrate a special occasion, or when I'm sad. He also knows the kind of music I like, the books I read, and the places I frequently visit. It took a long time for him to reach this level of knowledge about me. He had to observe me in the course of our friendship of many years.

I believe that God also wants us to know Him well. To know Him is to love Him. To know Him is to trust Him. It gives Him pleasure when we observe how He takes care of us specially in times when we feel so helpless in the midst of trouble. All we need to do is to come to Him and believe that He is a prayer-answering God who loves us deeply. What we observe, will build in us the confidence that He is always with us.

When fear sets in, and we need to weigh in, let us always remember that nothing is impossible nor too difficult for Him!

Paper...Not Pepper

Paper...not pepper. How do you explain to your niece that a sheet of "paper" is not pronounced as a sheet of "pepper"? How can you argue with, "But my teacher said pepper...not paper."

It is sad to think that the quality of education offered in many of our schools nowadays, is at its all time low. One of the main reasons for this decline is the exodus of qualified teachers who choose to work in other countries where their efforts are well compensated. Can we blame them? We cannot shove the spirit of nationalism down the throat of a parent who desires to provide for the needs of his/her children.

On the other hand, there are a few excellent teachers who turn their backs on the so-called "greener pastures". They choose to remain in the country and serve their countrymen by teaching passionately as well as training others to do the same. Thank God for these selfless individuals!

Beautifully Imperfect

In a TV commercial that shows how imperfections make a relationship perfect, the words said serve as a wake-up call to not be blind to the real value of our loved ones.

Here's the script followed by the video.

Coordinator:
"Mrs. Lee, I believe you have some words to say about the dearly departed."

Mrs. Lee:
"I'm not going to sing praises for my late husband. Not today. Neither am I going to talk about how good he was. Enough people have done that here. Instead, I want to talk about some things that will make some of you feel a bit uncomfortable.

First off, I want to talk about what happened in bed. Ever had difficulty starting your car engine in the morning? (Mrs. Lee makes a loud snoring sound resembling a car engine's difficult start) Well, that's exactly what David's snoring sounded like but wait, snoring wasn't everything. There was also this rear end wind action going on as well. Some nights, it would be so forceful, it would wake him up. 'What was that?', he would ask. 'Oh it's the dog.' I would say, 'Go back to sleep, dear.'

Oh you might find this all very funny, but toward the end of his life, when his illness was at its worst, these sounds indicated to me that my David was still alive -- and what I wouldn't give just to hear those sounds again before I sleep.

In the end is (are) these small things that you remember -- the little imperfections that make them perfect for you.

So to my beautiful children, I hope one day, you too find yourselves life partners who are as beautifully imperfect as your father was to me."

Light For My Path

As people become increasingly anxious about so many things from financial to health issues, it is wise to go back to the Word of God in order to shed light in this dark situation.

"Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119: 105)

"Show me the right path, O LORD, point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by Your truth and teach me, for You are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in You. Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and unfailing love, which You have shown from long ages past. Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth. Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for You are merciful, O LORD. The LORD is good and does what is right, He shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them His way. The LORD leads with unfailing love and faithfulness all who keep His covenant and obey His demands." (Psalm 25: 4-10)

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4: 6,7)

Let us choose to lift our burdens unto the Lord who was, who is, and who will always be mighty to save!

Tunay Na Biyaya

Tunay na Biyaya

Only Green Means Go

As I waited for the traffic light to turn green so I could cross to the other side of the street, something clicked inside me. The truth that only green means go (not red, not yellow), served as a very timely reminder.

Life is full of red, yellow and green lights. If we're not careful, we can confuse one for the other thus causing enormous pain. How many times have we stopped when we were supposed to go full speed ahead? How about those missed opportunities to "smell the flowers" when we chose to rush through important seasons in our lives? Who could forget those moments when we thought preparation was a waste of time until we fell flat on our faces as we did things unequipped?

"For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace." (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8)

There is a season and purpose for everything.

George Sampson: Perseverance Uncut

Perseverance is the steady pursuit of a goal inspite of difficulties and obstacles. Sadly, there are less and less people who have this admirable quality.

A fine example of perseverance is George Sampson, the 14 year old boy who danced his way to victory in the 2008 Britain's Got Talent competition. He first joined the competition in 2007 but did not make it to the finals. Instead of giving up on his dream, he did everything to raise the bar and become a better dancer by undergoing intensive training and practice. George would raise funds to pay for training by literally dancing in the street. He was earlier diagnosed to have a disease that involved the curve of his spine. The disease meant that his dancing would put his health at risk but even this obstacle did not stop George from dancing.

George's life is so centered on dancing that when he was asked to describe his ideal girl, he said she should be a good dancer. A person who is passionate about his craft wants to be surrounded with people who share the same passion.

What a great reminder!

Healthy versus Toxic Relationship

"A healthy relationship is full of laughter, gratitude, kindness and respect. If conflict is crowding out all these elements and leaving you with nothing but constant squabbling, then it's going to be tough to build a meaningful and fulfilling relationship." I am not sure if this quote was texted or emailed to me but isn't it just sooo true?!

Healthy relationships make life so much better. They inspire us to be the best that we can be. They make us confident in taking risks knowing that we have a support system that will carry us through difficult situations.

On the other hand, toxic relationships can snuff the light out of us like a lighted cande in the middle of the storm. The word "toxic" is an appropriate adjective for this kind of relationship because it can cause malfunction, injury, a poisonous effect, and sometimes even death.

An example of a toxic relationship is the one that teenagers usually get into nowadays. A pretty girl meets a good-looking boy and decides to have a romantic relationship based on an initial physical attraction. The problem here is, since the relationship is founded on physical attraction, all kinds of insecurities come in. The girl thinks to herself: "Will my boyfriend still want me to be his girlfriend if he meets another girl who is a lot prettier than I am?" This fear will cause jealousy and fits of anger which will soon lead to the end of the relationship.

Life is a series of choices so always take time to make the right ones!

Stubborn Love

STUBBORN LOVE
(a poem by Confideo)

I look into your eyes and see eternity unfold before me
Your presence fills my life to an almost intolerable degree
The rebel deep within sometimes wants to just run and escape from you
But your stubborn love would not give up as you pursue me through and through

As I allow you to show me your love in ways nobody else can
My heart longs for an answer to: "How could you be so extravagant?"
I realize that the years I lived before you came into my life
Were characterized by wandering in circles on a cold, cold night

Now a day without you is something I would compare to a nightmare
The intensity of your love creates a need to come to you bare
Bare of all pretensions, hypocrisies, and everything else untrue
Because of who you are, my response can only be... "I love you, too."

Kris Allen: Giving The World A Heart Attack

I am not surprised that Kris Allen won the American Idol Season 8 competition. After all, he did give the world a heart attack -- he delivered his songs from the heart.

Once the contestants make it to the finals, it would be safe to say that their vocal skills have been judged as excellent. In addition to vocals, glamour and technique can bring a contestant far in the race to victory. But as illustrated in the American Idol's final results where Kris Allen came out victorious, singing is mainly a heart touching another heart.

In a high-tech world such as ours, Kris Allen showed us what a high-touch approach can do.

Bonding With Eli

Before anything else, I would like to thank everyone who prayed for my auntie's successful open heart surgery. She is presently regaining strength and is recovering wonderfully. Another proof that faith-filled prayer does move mountains.

Eli and I finally had our long-awaited bonding time late last night. Just as my auntie had an open heart surgery, Eli and I had an open heart conversation. She talked about her difficulty in finding what she really wants in life because of the stress and pressure at work. She is the kind of person who thrives on challenges and who constantly tries to prove something to the people around her.

As we tried to probe into what her motives behind her actions were, the fact that she was a people pleaser surfaced. The things she ended up doing were not necessarily what she wanted but what other people expected and sometimes even demanded of her. She admits that she is sad and is looking for something in life, but does not know exactly what it is.

I advised her to ask God to reveal to her what her real purpose is and to walk in that purpose. Hopefully, she will find herself soon and be the kind of person she was meant to be.

Qualities Of A Good Leader

What are the qualities of a good leader?

With Philippine national elections just around the corner (May 2010), we should be ready with our own checklist enumerating the qualities of a good leader.

Here's my partial checklist:

(1) A good leader gets his/her guidance from credible sources (tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are, right?).
(2) A good leader is a man/woman of integrity (one who will always choose to do the right thing).
(3) A good leader is fair (one who makes sure that the law is applicable to all, including himself/herself).
(4) A good leader has foresight (able to see far into the future).
(5) A good leader is God-fearing (serves people as a way of serving God).
(6) A good leader is flexible (able to change plans if the situation requires it).
(7) A good leader sees himself/herself as a public SERVANT and not a public master.
(8) A good leader inspires people to develop their potential.
(9) A good leader leads by example.
(10) A good leader is an excellent communicator.
(11) A good leader is diligent (persistent in accomplishing something).
(12) A good leader has an excellent record in fulfilling his/her responsibilities (as a student, a worker, a parent, a son/daughter, a brother/sister, a husband/wife, a member of the community, etc.)
(13) A good leader is willing to sacrifice personal gain for the good of his/her constituents.
(14) A good leader lives modestly (does not have an overconsumptive lifestyle).
(15) A good leader has good work ethics (i.e. always on time).
(16) A good leader remains cool under pressure (specially during a time of crisis).

Some might think that this list is quite idealistic but the fact is, we have to raise our standards. If we do not raise the bar, we will have to be content with mediocrity for years to come. Yikes!

I Don't Want To Go

One of my favorite songs is I Don't Want To Go by Avalon. The chorus goes, "I don't want to go somewhere if I know that you're not there 'cause I know that ME WITHOUT YOU, IS A LIE. I don't want to walk that road, be a million miles from home, 'cause my heart needs to be where you are. So I don't want to go.".

This song reminds me of the bible characters: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. These young boys refused to worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar set up. They preferred to be punished and thrown into a blazing furnace than do something that would displease their God. As a reward for their faith, they experienced the delivering presence of the Lord in a situation that served as a testimony of God's power.

The amazing part of the story is that when King Nebuchadnezzar witnessed how God saved these three teenagers from the fire, he became a believer and exclaimed, "... There is no other God who can rescue like this!" (Daniel 3:29).

Let us remember that the God in our mountaintop experiences is the same God who walks with us through the low valleys of our lives. "The Lord says, 'I will rescue those who love Me. I will protect those who trust in My Name. When they call on Me, I will answer: I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them My salvation." (Psalm 91:14-16).

May we always seek His presence in everything we do.

Lost In Translation

Do you have people in your life who make you feel like you're walking on pins and needles every time they are around? People who have the unique ability of twisting what you say and make it appear like a message from hell? People who make you scratch your head in disbelief as you resolve to write down everything you say to them so you have proof that their violent reactions are baseless? People who are...lost in translation?

Oh you know they love you -- but they don't understand you. They even go to the extreme of airing their displeasure to others who will never bother to hear your side of the story (okay, okay, if they do this then they don't love you). Arrgh!

People like these make you realize that there is only one person who truly knows, understands and loves you perfectly -- God Himself.

"O Lord, You have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous -- how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed." (Psalm 139: 1-6; 13-16).

With this in mind, it is foolish to expect things from people that only He can provide. It is true that life's frustrations are designed to draw us closer to our Creator.

Count The Cost

An advice which I consider to be one of the best I have received so far is to count the cost of every option before making a decision. Most of my forehead-slapping moments in life are caused by failing to count the cost first. This principle can be applied to all aspects of one's life.

Can you imagine how unwise it would be to accept a job offer that pays less than needed to cover transportation expenses? To get into a sport that requires practice time that is more than what your schedule allows? To work overseas and leave your children without proper guidance? To vote for a political candidate who is not even responsible with his or her personal relationships? To expect your faith to grow without going through difficult times where you see the hand of God at work?

We could be saved from a lot of head/heartaches by starting to count the cost on a regular basis.

Filipino Hospitality

My friend Mymy sent me an email about someone who was racially discriminating Filipinos. It is true that as a people, we are still a work in progress (what country isn't?) but there are also many reasons to be proud of the Filipino.

Many Filipinos have showcased excellence locally as well as internationally in fields such as: singing, painting, fashion designing, boxing, furniture making, computer animation, teaching, nursing, agriculture, culinary arts, services that require TLC (tender loving care) among others.

While watching TV, I came across an Asian businessman narrating his experience in a Philippine airport. He said that the one who checked his papers looked at him, smiled warmly and said, "Happy Birthday!". He said that this experience was unique because in other international airports, the airport staff would just look at him and say, "Next!".

This kind of comment about the Filipinos' warmth and hospitality is not uncommon. I think Filipino entrepreneurs should look into putting up schools that train people in hospitality. Filipinos can teach the world a thing or two in this field.

To all Filipino-bashing individuals: "Try not to make sweeping statements based on the little information you know about us. Before you pass judgment, make sure you gather all the facts first."

***************************************

Question: How do you deal with discrimination?

Firing The Matchmaker

The song Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof musicale goes, "Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match. Find me a find. Catch me a catch. Matchmaker, matchmaker, look through your book and make me a perfect match.". The lyrics may seem funny but in real life, having other people decide who you should have a relationship with, is no joke. It is time to fire the matchmaker.

Sadly, there are couples who are unhappy because they gave in to teases coming from peers. They failed to go through the process of getting to know each other well before plunging into a committed connection. Making a relationship work with someone you hardly know is like climbing a mountain without the necessary equipment. Chances of making it to the top is slimmer than that of falling off the slope.

I remember a college professor tell us that the requirements for a strong relationship are: (1) knowledge; (2) care; (3) quality time; (4) commitment and (5) respect.

Being a recovering matchmaker myself, I have witnessed bonds break because of the absence of one or two of these requirements. Now that I know better, I encourage prospective couples to make the necessary preparations before entering into a committed relationship. This is one aspect of life where shortcuts are not acceptable.

Thrilla In Manila Part Two

Back in 1975, the Araneta Coliseum (located at Quezon City, Manila, Philippines) was the site of one of the greatest fights in boxing history dubbed as the Thrilla in Manila. This fight is where Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier almost beat each other to the pulp. In the end, Ali emerged the winner via technical knock-out (TKO).

Last April 19, 2009, Araneta Coliseum crowd witnessed a Thrilla in Manila Part Two in back-to-back fights where two Filipinos emerged as champions. They are Nonito Donaire, Jr. and Brian Viloria.

Brian Viloria defeated Jose Ulises Solis thus earning the IBF (International Boxing Federation) Junior Flyweight title. This match served as the supporting bout to the main event where Nonito Donaire, Jr. (rightfully called The Filipino Flash) defended his IBF Flyweight title. Donaire beat Raul Martinez via TKO on the 4th round. Woot!

Congratulations to Nonito Donaire, Jr. and Brian Viloria!
